Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song
« on: January 20, 2016, 03:58:43 PM »
Who?
What?
A SaGa game... What the hell is that?

The SaGa series actually started on the GameBoy with the Final Fantasy Legend trilogy. It moved on to be an only Japan release for the Romancing SaGa trilogy on the SNES. The SaGA Frontier duo made it's mark on the PlayStation. A risky move came when Square released Unlimited SaGa on the PS2 with it's uniquely weird exploration and battle style. Also on the PS2 was the remake of the first Romancing SaGa for SNES.

I've been tooling around with this game here and there and now I feel is the time where I do some kind of LP with it. I've always been a fan of the series since I played my first SaGa game on PSX. It was years later I was able to revisit fanlations for the first and third SNES installations. Since Minstrel Song was able to hit the US, it would be better to go with doing this game instead of a fanlation.

So, a nice twist to anything would be for readers/watchers to have their hand in my fate in the game... I want to hear who you want me to pick as my main character!

  • Albert - When Isthmus Keep was attacked by monsters, Lord Rudolf, Albert's father, send him out to Crystal City to warn Prince Neidhart, but the journey turns out more difficult than assumed.
  • Aisha - A Taralian, grand-daughter of tribe elder Nizan. Soon her tribesmen vanish and she embarks on a journey to find them.
  • Jamil - A thief from South Estamir. Embarks on a journey.
  • Claudia - A young girl raised by the witch Eule in Mazewood. She soon ventures out into Mardias.
  • Hawke - A pirate captain, his crew become betrayed by a pirate named Butcher. His ship sinks and he's forced to travel by land.
  • Sif - A Valhallan warrior. Embarks on a quest to uncover the secret of the Dragon Orb.
  • Gray - A traveler. Accompanied by Galahad and Myriam, he finds an ancient sword called Falcata near Jelton. The sword is able to talk and asks Gray to restore it.
  • Barbara - A dancer. The mysterious Minstrel grants her The Amethyst, one of the Fatestones.

One of my favorite parts about SaGa games is the ability to pretty much make your characters proficient with any weapons/magic. Pick some proficient skills!

Weapons: Foils(Rapiers), Short Swords, Long Swords, Great Swords, Scimitars, Hand Axes, Clubs, Two-Handed Swords, Katanas, Two-Handed Axes, Staves, Pole Arms, Lances, Bows

Magic:
  • Pyrology <-> Hydrology
  • Aerology <-> Terrology
  • Illusion <-> Demonology
  • Cosmology <-> Sorcery
  • Bewitchery <-> Necromancy
Please note that the magic schools across from each other cancel each other out; for example, no character can use both Pyrology(Fire) and Hydrology(Water) magic.

Hopefully I can get a bump with some constructive choices to make my playthrough insane easy enough. :)

And to start our quest, a little story info:

"In ages past, when the world was young, there lived three gods of evil:
Death, Saruin, and Schirach.
Death, the eldest, ruled the netherworld and its army of the dead.
His brother, Saruin, was the lord of destruction and ruler of all that was
evil. Their sister, Schirach, rules over the darkness with her formidable powers of magic.

Together, the three of them led a horde of monsters against an alliance of gods
and their mortal children. The forces met in furious battle. The lord of the gods, Elore, created Fatestones and gave them to the hero
Mirsa. The three gods of evil were defeated, and Saruin was imprisoned through the
power of the Fatestones. Mirsa gave his life, but the tale of Mirsa and the Fatestones became a legend that will never be forgotten."

Heh. This kinda reminds me of those old RPG registration threads. I'll bite; I could always use another old RPG series to get around too, and the SaGa games I haven't touched yet.

I like Albert. A somewhat unassuming messenger boy who gets wrapped up in something bigger than himself as he flees peril. Sounds like the makings of a great hero and a long adventure. Probably good with a rapier and an acolyte of Aerology.

And so we begin...

Here is our lovely title screen:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/kikc6m2fsxf6hid/Screenshot%202016-02-01%2021.41.21.png?raw=1

Our adventure begins with Albert, the young nobleman from Isthmus:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/4hn138qjua7t4tu/Screenshot%202016-02-01%2021.44.46.png?raw=1

His stats aren't all that great, but starting with a class also dumps some stats. I'm going to go in classless and eventually train him up in Rapiers and Aerology. This might require two classes but that is fine since you only need to get a class to level 3/5 to start training individual skills. As for Albert's name, he is now Jerry.

We get a little glimpse of the world map and some back story about the Isthmus being now under Rosalian control:

Jerry's sister Diana has come to get her brother ready for a small mission to clean out a local cave of monsters:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/41ukycitjovtme5/Screenshot%202016-02-01%2021.54.25.png?raw=1
"Dammit, Diana, I told you not to bother me when I'm cleaning my room!"

We then have a chance to equip our hero with some equipment, and head down to the throne room. Luckily for our skill picks, he starts with a Epee anyway. (Now I just have to buy Aerology spells later. $$$$$$$$)

Wow, Isthmus, what big rooms you have:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/1e62jtu5gi0gmeb/Screenshot%202016-02-01%2021.58.13.png?raw=1
"All the better to get you inside of me, my dear."

Diana is telling father that she and Jerry will slay the monsters in the cave.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fayom7qax5c9b3z/Screenshot%202016-02-01%2021.58.52.png?raw=1
"But Diana, men will be coming soon to want to knock you up. You can't be going out in battle like this!"
But really Lord Rudolph, I'm sure your heart is in the right place, but she'll skin a bear with it's own teeth. (Must be the broad shoulders.)

Two knights also accompany Jerry and Diana out into the fields in front of the Isthmus. Here, we stumble onto a conspicuous cavern.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/df04307bohgwt32/Screenshot%202016-02-01%2022.01.02.png?raw=1
"Wow, I wonder what's in here!"

Heading down the slightly serpentine path, we encounter a few monsters on the way. Some way uglier than the others.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/yj89kedhivmx7go/Screenshot%202016-02-01%2022.03.53.png?raw=1
"Oh crap, it spotted me! Run! RUN!"

So like most SaGa games, you learn new skills randomly in battle. In this game, it is called a 'Glimmer'. Since Jerry doesn't have a proficiency in Epees yet, skills will use a lot of Durability Points on weapons when used. Yes, weapons have duability. (No, this isn't Fire Emblem.) Impact Slash deals damage twice to a single enemy, and is a pretty great starting skill.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/3l3kkx5nwjjrkek/Screenshot%202016-02-01%2022.05.08.png?raw=1
"I feel inspired."

What would a dungeon be without treasure?
https://www.dropbox.com/s/r3vezuem7q7sj2k/Screenshot%202016-02-01%2022.06.00.png?raw=1
"Alright! Daddy needed a new pair of shoes."

Remember when I said some enemies were uglier? Well this one is stronger too!
https://www.dropbox.com/s/f0cpom8hwmrbf6o/Screenshot%202016-02-01%2022.07.24.png?raw=1
"Grr! Arg!"

Cue boss fight and epic music:
https://youtu.be/BeR9SdogbGc
Of course Jerry dies early in the fight. We gotta train this boy up. Blunt Strike was learned by some of the knights, but it is useless against most bosses since they cannot be stunned.

Jerry leaves the cave with Diana and the other knights, while still thinking about the strange markings he saw on the wall after they killed the boss. (Oh, bad premonition!)
We approach the Isthmus...

Stay tuned for Part Two: Electric Boogaloo.
