I got Skyrim via Steam
« on: January 17, 2013, 11:09:58 AM »
It was a birthday gift from my brother.

I have a question: How do you patch the darn game? :P

Edit: I figured it out. :P

Congrats on getting the PC version of a fun game!
Just remember: play through the entirety of the game before you start modding. For some reason (at least for me) whenever I have mods on, I can't get achievements.

Ah, okay.

Well, I have one "mod" on--no blood. But it hasn't stopped me from getting achievements since you just extract the textures and meshes directories into Skyrim/Data/

It's a fun game. I figured out how to number favorites again. XD

I'm playing a female High Elf named "Alexis." I think I'll make her a magic swordswoman.

Very nice choice. My favourite character I've made was a Redguard light armor sword/shield gladiator style character. Built his own gear, refused to use any other kind. Did mean I missed out on some legendary gear, but when you glitch the system to get over 100 armor/enchanting, it doesn't matter too much.

While I agree gameplay mods can wait, I strongly suggest, if you want to really enjoy the environments, download an ENB mod.  Realistic lighting mods are fantastic, and don't really hurt performance at all.  This one is my favorite.

Also, get the unofficial skyrim patch from steam asap.  It fixes a lot of glitches and bugs that the official patches missed.

Also, get the script extender and SkyUI.  The default Skyrim menu is unforgivably bad.  SkyUI is how it should have been in the first place.

EDIT

Also, do the main quest before the civil war questline.  Doing the civil war questline first causes a really cool bit of the main quest to be skipped over.

Is the civil war the one where Whiterun;s Jarl sends you to delivier an axe to Ulfric? I haven't gotten anywhere near that far, myself, but I've seen bits and pieces of it while watching my roomates playing on the XBox360 up front. They scoff at my reasoning for getting it for the PC (the mods!)
Never say never or always. In most cases, there is an exception to anything you can think of that you might use either word in. "Most likely" and "highly improbable" in a lot of those cases would ring true, but not never/always.

Yeah, the civil war questline involves the stormcloaks and imperials.

This is the one Elder Scrolls game that there cannot be a debate on PC/XBox unless you don't have a PC strong enough. It has controller support. I tend to play non-archers/casters with my controller, as I feel melee is easier then.

I do tend to forget about the graphic/sound mods when I tell people no mods until you beat the game.
I tend to do the Civil War up until before the climax (not ruining it for anyone), then complete the main storyline, go back and beat the civil war.

I didn't know about SkyUI, I'll have to remind myself to grab it.

Will the unofficial patch and the lighting mods stop me from getting achievements?

No, no mods will stop you from getting achievements.  You can check my steam profile if you want, where I have all normal achievements (I have most in Hearthfire, and none in Dawnguard, since I haven't started that campaign yet :P)

But if nothing else, I absolutely urge you to get SkyUI.  It makes actually playing the game way easier.  Skyrim's default menus are just...  they're hideous.

Which ENB should I get?

Also, will I be able to play with the mods on offline mode?

Edit: You can. Also, I'm getting an error with SkyUI. It keeps telling me that "SEKE" (or whatever) is not working properly. :( The SkyUI is very nice, and it seems to work... but... if the SKSE is not working properly, I could have bugs. :S

Edit2: It works now if I run the skse_loader.exe However, I want to run Skyrim from STEAM, how can I do that while loading the skse?

It still runs through Steam using the loader.  And yes mods will work in offline mode

For ENB choose whichever one you think looks best.  I use the customizable realistic lighting vivid package but there are much better ones available now.

Yeah, I noticed Steam has be running first before you can use the SKSE loader. But I can't just click on "Elder Scrolls: Skyrim" on the steam menu, otherwise, SKSE doesn't work. Oh well.

I downloaded the ENB, and it really slowed down my computer. I can only run the game on high normally. :/

Hmm there are some that don't impact performance at all.  The none I linked must have :/

What I did was pin the loader icon to my start menu, change the icon, and rename it Skyrim.

Yeah. I did that, too, but steam needs to be running, otherwise, I get the script error.
