Uploading a GBA rom to a GBA cart?
« on: December 21, 2016, 09:53:54 AM »
So, I have some patches for the FF6 GBA version that restore the music and colors to the original. I have an original FF6 GBA cart and I was wondering... does anyone know how to upload the .gba rom and override the cart without corrupting it? Or perhaps, is there a way I can get a blank GBA cart and upload it?

And what tools do I need? Sorry, I hope this doesn't break our rules. If so, I'll google it.

I don't think there's much need to worry about the rules, given the state of the place. You've got the original cart, so it's fair to say you bought it.

I would recommend getting a blank cart, if you really want that authentic experience, but I don't know how you'd get a fresh sticker on it.

On the other hand, if you have a DS or 3DS, and you feel like player other patched roms on there, you might want to invest something like an AceKard: http://www.acekard3.com/

Thanks, but it says it only plays NDS roms and above. :/

Also, I did a lot of researching, the process is CONFUSING and it looks expensive. Apparently, I need a flash cart, however, I have no GBA, and from what I read... you can only make the GBA cart with the rom work if you get a special card for the DS AND the Flash GBA cart and put them together. If I have a normal GBA or GBA SP, I could make it a standalone cart.

I think...

And as I said, it looks very expensive. I think I need something like EZ Flash IV, MicroSD Card, and some other things I'm not aware about. ;-;

Edit: did further research, found out you just need a MicroSD Card with the latest EZ Flash, put the rom on the SD card, pop it into the flash cart and then into the DS. No other carts required. Big issue is... you can't save and turn off, you have to use a button input. :/ I really just want to take my official cart and override it with the restored gba rom... but rom is Read ONLY Memory, so there's no writing.

Flash Carts also allow multiple games, I just want FF6 GBA restored on its own cart. XD

Edit2: Someone already did it. I found a copy of FF6 GBA using the restored rom on its own cart on eBay. 100% feedback, has a good return policy and they used a legit cart. Wow. I'm not linking it, but... with 38 sold and five left, and it's way cheaper than doing it myself... I'm going to bite the bullet.

Keeping it to yourself, eh?

Enjoy. I know I need to do the same before Christmas is done, or I'll go nuts starting next year when I either start working or start looking for work again.

More like I feel like it's against forum rules to link it.

Thanks. XD

GBA cartridges (original ones) are not rewritable. They have MaskROM chips inside them. Their data is a permanent part of the circuit. Throughout the lifespan of the GBA and beyond you could buy 3rd party flash cartridges to flash ROMs on as they were rewritable cartridges.

If you want one game, buying a bootleg/reproduction cartridge probably isn't a bad idea. However if you want multiple games you are better off buying an actual Flash cartridge like an EverDrive.
