I agree, it makes it less like spam and more like something that can contribute.

Why do I feel like I just opened Pandora's Box?  As soon as I suggested this, spammers hit us hard.  That was definitely not what I was going for.

lol it's ggoing to happen. I'm going to do some work soon on getting the guidelines more prevalent, though most still won't read them. I think I can change the terms of use agreement thingy that people have to agree to. As soon as I can see a little better (my eyesight is getting worse, and am trying to get fast tracked for disability in order to take care of it).
Never say never or always. In most cases, there is an exception to anything you can think of that you might use either word in. "Most likely" and "highly improbable" in a lot of those cases would ring true, but not never/always.

I don't believe in coincidences online. It's more likely that keys words and phrases were picked up by the bots and others in recent posts like 'advertising' and general pro advertising discussion and the like and then like moths to a flame they came. That said, even spam traffic is still traffic, and with the spam may come humans who might want to contribute as the spiders crawl over the forums and pick things up that people are searching for. Web traffic is inherently messy, but one must have the mess to filter out to get the results one wants (within reason of course).

Speaking of spam and advertising, I've been noticing the occasional child porn/random spam thread being opened by spam bots in the General Chat. I've also been noticing HTTP 500 bugs, but that's for another thread.

Since this place is pretty inactive now, but some of us are coming around here more regularly, maybe we can help with general site maintenance for free?

And I've been purifying the stupid porn spam threads by bots. Ugh. I'm thinking we should start fresh somewhere or something. :/

I guess that's a sensible option, though I'd like to keep what's left of GU preserved and available somehow.

Archive the site? Except it would probably still cost Rowan money. :(

Preserve it?
Uh, shut down new memberships.

Unless if someone's a friend/related of a member here, there hasn't been a real new join in years.
So, you stop all bots, by denying new joins.

It doesn't look like this place is poised for a sudden influx of new active members, so restricting memberships doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Perhaps a thread can be pinned up for membership requests with an address they can email?

Referral system?  Like maybe program the block that shows "Who referred you?" so it matches up with an actual (non-banned) GU member before it accepts the request?
