Let's Discuss Member Advertisement Privileges
« on: August 25, 2016, 01:29:46 PM »
So, one of the things we frown on is advertisement, but we tend to allow small bits from oldbies or not-so-newbies here and there (usually with permission, otherwise it's just been in our signatures).  However, our activity is still dwindling, and we're still struggling for ideas to generate more activity.  One of the problems is how busy we all are.  Between jobs, families, non-GU projects, or anything else going on in our lives outside of GU, we've found little incentive beyond nostalgia to come back here.

Soooooooo...

Since we've got a lot going on in life but refuse to let GU go forever, I thought maybe we could find a way to bring some of the work here to GU by allowing some kind of advertisements.  I am not saying get rid of the no-advertising rule entirely, but I'd like to discuss ways to generate some kind of attention toward our jobs or non-GU projects in a safe and non-spamming manner.

My immediate thought is to open an ADVERTISE HERE forum, so ads remain contained.  Maybe it can include a minimum-post rule (subject to spam laws), like each member needs at least 50 or so legitimate posts on GU to advertise in that forum.  Maybe we can establish other rules regarding this (no porn, obviously).  Depending on the kind of advertisements, we could create sub-forums that group them together (Arts/Entertainment, Industry, Sales, etc.).  Perhaps some of us are looking for services the other can provide that we don't realize, so this can help.

Anyway, I'm spit-balling, here.  What are your thoughts or ideas?

KoH...

We haven't decided on whether or not to actually go forward with advertising! >_<;

Anyway, I think a forum would be a good idea.

I'm fine with it. If someone wants to talk up their Youtube channel or something they're doing/making/selling, it gives them an avenue to do so. I don't see the need for a separate forum yet given that activity is very low. You could let them post in GCC, GL, A&E, etc depending on what they're putting out so their content will still need to match the forum and then wait for activity to improve before tossing them into a forum that nobody'll go to because it's nothing but ads. Given that it's forum posts and not crap like Google Ads and the like they can still turn into discussion and bring up praises and flaws alike.

Guess it depends on what were advertising.
In the post above, I advertised something my brother worked on, basically a GU member.

If you're advertising something you didn't make, or not apart of, then why you advertising it?
Also, certain advertising can create a discussion.

 I like the idea for now, but there needs to be tagging in the topic totle, imo
Never say never or always. In most cases, there is an exception to anything you can think of that you might use either word in. "Most likely" and "highly improbable" in a lot of those cases would ring true, but not never/always.

Indeed, I do. Simple and effective.

Maybe slightly less, given our low activity, at the moment? Maybe a middle ground?

And should we have a forum for it?

Not unless it becomes a problem. We already have a flood of boards that are inactive.

Perhaps each can go in whichever forum is appropriate, like A&E, Development, GD, or in a pinch GCC.  Maybe something party-themed could go into FH?
