Make your own engine. Dev C++ is free. You could use SDL, OpenGL, Allegro, or other libraries. Even Direct X directly if you just want to target Windows.

http://www.lazyfoo.net has a decent SDL tutorial. I'd suggest learning C or C++ first.
Never say never or always. In most cases, there is an exception to anything you can think of that you might use either word in. "Most likely" and "highly improbable" in a lot of those cases would ring true, but not never/always.

Wasn't there a big migration from an older forum to this one? AGN it was called?

I forget how I found this place, but it wasn't from that. I was just into Capcom games and anime back then and kinda stumbled upon the place. Nowadays everyone has Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter or *chan, so forums have become niche in comparison.

These days I'm just trying to find a job. I also like to reminisce on simpler times before I got caught up in the latest internet fad and wanted to spend all my time on imageboards, among other things.

AGN is pretty much quiet but ZC is still being developed. Not sure about the migration.

I came here from AGN. Probably some other members too, though I don't know if they're still here.

I thought PureZC was dead? Is ZeldaClassic.com still around or whatever the website is called?

I'm an AGN refugee, too.

As did I. I found out about GU through Zeo and Jimmy posting on AGN about it. I think most of the oldest members here probably came over from AGN.
